How to start a filmmaking youtube channel
I guess this is what a year of ranting looks like.
Well, I’m going to let my video (below) speak for itself. But before I do, let me let some cliches - re creating a YouTube filmmaking and photography channel - rip.
Just start. Yep, I said it.
The hardest part is the discipline to do it when there is no return (save for the joy in creating).
It’s hard to be original and be true to yourself, which relates to:
If you’re doing it for the wrong reasons, it’ll suck. Figure out your goals before starting.
Set up a dedicated space for recording videos (if you need to light them).
Pick a niche (unlike me - but my video explains why I didn’t!).
There’s probably more but damn I forget where I was going with this list.
Anyways, yeah…just some cliches from the hip. It’s funny, I actually started another YouTube channel about 2 years ago. That channel was specifically focused on birding, wildlife, and conservation. And even though it “failed” (miserably I might add), it taught me a lot when it came time to make videos for my own, my production company, channel. *That birding video didn’t fail in terms of views, just in what I expected it would take to create regular videos that were well made.
And I should clarify that I started uploading videos to my business channel when I started my business about 6 years ago, but those were just random client videos, passion projects for my portfolio, and anything and everything in between. But the rub is, I told myself way back then to create regular videos documenting that. Alas, here we are.
So full circle…a year ago I started making those videos. Documenting my production company’s ups and downs, my filmmaking and photography journey, lessons I’ve learned, travel experiences, etc. I wish I started earlier, years ago, when I told myself to. Oh well. Check out my video below. Cheers.
Here’s how I started my filmmaking and photography YouTube channel. Or thereabouts.
